About This Project

Dismantling Power Structures

Deconstructing the oppressive, racialised structures of apartheid – the hostels of the apartheid regime are reflective of control in the urban fabric. Often shaped like prisons, hostels are a ubiquitous feature of the rural and urban South African landscape. This project explores the possibilities to dismantle the historic fabric towards creating a just city through spatial integration and the creation of strong local connections, porosity and opportunity. Part of the Neighbourhood Development Partnership Grant (NDPG) programme, the projects identified as part of this process will stimulate and accelerate investment in these under-served residential neighbourhoods towards achieving spatial justice.
